Stunning sandy beaches that stretch for miles and sparkling blue waters can be found just a short drive from Santo Domingo. These beaches are located in the nearby towns of Boca Chica (30 minutes by car) and Juan Dolio (45 minutes).

The beach areas are close enough for a fun and easy day trip. However, many travelers decide to stay a few days in the city and a few days at the beach. Boca Chica and Juan Dolio both have relaxing all-inclusive resorts and many beachfront restaurants.

While you are enjoying the beach, you may occasionally be approached by local vendors selling handmade jewelry, sarongs and other items that make great souvenirs.

Smaller Santo Domingo Beaches

Playa Caribe

Caribe Beach
Also known as Embassy Beach, Playa Caribe is a small beach located between Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. The waters in this inlet are usually calm in the morning but can develop waves in the afternoon, making it a good place for boogie boarding.

Guayacanes

Guayacanes beach
Guayacanes beach is located just west of Juan Dolio. It offers plenty of palm trees for relaxing in the shade. This beach is quiet during the week and busy on weekends and holidays. The waters are shallow and usually calm.

Getting there

There are two main ways to get to the Santo Domingo beaches. The first is to take a taxi (US $30-$50, depending on the distance). If your Spanish is not good, this is probably your best option. The second, more adventurous way is to take an express guagua to Boca Chica or Juan Dolio. These are small older buses, usually with air conditioning. They leave from Parque Enriquillo (north of the Colonial Zone). Lots of buses depart from this park, so make sure you double-check that it is the express bus to your destination. The fare should be about 150 pesos (approx. US$ 3.50) per person.
