The Dominican Republic is known for its unique art, particularly paintings. Santo Domingo is the center of Dominican art and many contemporary artists live and work in the Colonial Zone. This means there are plenty of opportunities to purchase original Dominican art in one of the area’s many art galleries and shops.
Tourists should avoid purchasing artwork from merchants selling outdoors on El Conde. Many of these ‘paintings’ are mass produced rather than original works of art.
To avoid being fooled, it is better to shop in one of the many stores specializing in art. There are a several reputable art galleries in the Colonial Zone.
One of the very best sources for original Haitian and Dominican art can be found online. There are always beautiful and authentic paintings by Dominican & Haitian artists available.
Haitian & Dominican Art Gallery
Located in the heart of the Colonial Zone, Haitian & Dominican Art Gallery has one of Santo Domingo’s largest selection of works by Haitian artists, as well as a large inventory of Dominican works by Masters and younger and emerging artists. Galeria Bolos
Located on Isabel Catolica, this gallery features an eclectic selection of Dominican and Haitian artists, with an emphasis on Art Naif, Outsider Art and Haitian Art of different schools. The gallery is open, bright and beautifully decorated with paintings, sculpture, crafts and furniture. There are also very reasonably priced, smaller items that would make great souvenirs. This is a must-see gallery, so don’t miss it!
Colegio Dominicano De Artistas Plásticos
Another art gallery of sorts in the Colonial Zone is run by the Colegio Dominicano de Artististas Plásticos. The Colegio displays works of art by its member artists. It has an interesting selection of works by different contemporary Dominican artists. Prices vary depending on the artist, so ask about a few different works to find something in your price range.
